Music and Dance are the art forms that play an integral part in every culture that exists today. Each culture has its representation of music and dance. Africa has a rich culture and heritage. The Africans are still known to stick to their culture and heritage to preserve it and nurture it for future generations.
African music just like its history has come a long way. There are parts where the original African music has combined and can be found as an amalgamation of different forms of music from different parts of the world. Thus the current African music is a combination of different kinds of music found in the world.
What is the purpose of African music?
When traveling through Africa one can find variations in African music they differ in beats, music, and notation but they all have similar purposes of storytelling, communicating, celebrating, welcoming, and even religious ceremonies. Thus, African music is deeply integrated into the lives of African people taking part in various life events and incidents.
Instruments used in composing African music:
As we mentioned, African music has rich cultural significance and is deeply integrated with the lives of African people. Therefore most of the instruments that are used in composing African music are traditional. One can find a use of Talking Drum, Dundun, Djembe, and other different types of instruments.
Types of African Music:
Modern-day African music can be broadly classified into the following type:
Film music: Film music uses part of African music to set the entire platform for the films.For instance the music in the film The Lion King.
Classical music: Classical music are purely part of traditional African music. The rhythmic textures and patterns are used in it. Jazz and Salsa are examples of Classical music.
Blues: This style of music has elements of traditional music and other styles and forms of music. The music under this category includes Afrobeat, Afro-pop music, Rock n Roll music, Jazz, Gospel, and others.
Traditional African Music vs. Todays African Music:
There are several discussions related to African music and its existence. Most of them conclude that today’s African music is not a direct descendant of ancient African music. Ancient African music has undergone several decisive changes that are evident from the findings and research.
