Wednesday night marks the return of Arrow for its fifth season. I have to admit, I have some mixed feelings about the season five premiere. It had some really good points and one really, really bad point.
Let’s start with the good:
I like that Oliver is more ruthless once again, unafraid to kill. I do worry that we’ll never really get to the bottom of this moral quandary, with Oliver and those around him constantly chiding one another for killing in constant rotation. When Oliver is killing bad guys, Thea criticizes him; when Thea kills bad guys, Oliver criticizes her. I’m hoping we can fall into a rhythm where we either A) address this issue and come to a resolution or B) stop making it an issue to begin with.
One way or another, I like the Green Arrow as a more violent version of Batman. It makes him a more unique superhero.
I also liked that we got a brief glimpse at Wild Dog, a new up-and-coming vigilante with a hockey mask who just wants to help. So naturally, Oliver puts an arrow in his leg.
It’s also nice to see Curtis Holt join Team Arrow officially. Bring on Mr. Fantastic.
Meanwhile, the introduction of Tobias Church, played by Chad L. Coleman of The Walking Dead and The Expanse fame, was great. Corrupt cops kills some criminals to take their loot, but then Church shows up and spoils their plans. Church is brutal and mean and Coleman plays him with a rough, gravelly voice and wild eyes. I just hope his plan isn’t to destroy Star City in order to save it or something. Please don’t let that be the plot this season.
